For people who conduct programs for school age children, predominantly in a vacation care and/or before and after school program. Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Children’s Services (Outside School Hours Care) allows you to work in the children's services industry as an educator. |
As the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) phase in the
regulation requirement that all those working within children's services must hold a qualification, the Certificate IV in Children's Services (Outside School Hours Care) will appeal to new entrants to the middle childhood industry area and those just embarking on their childcare career in this sector. It will also be of interest to those who have been working in the industry for a number of years who are able to use recognition of prior learning. These experienced workers may well gain substantial credits towards the Certificate IV in Children’s Services (Outside School Hours Care), and as the prerequisite to the Diploma of Children’s Services (Outside School Hours Care), be well on the way to being highly qualified.
Occupational titles may vary depending on jurisdiction and legislation and may include:
• Assistant OSHC coordinator
• Mobile assistant
• OSHC assistant
• Outside school hours care supervisor / coordinator
• Play leader
• Program leader
• Recreation assistant
• Recreation leader
• Senior play leader
• Team leader
• Vacation care supervisor.
There are two ways to gain this qualification - through completing a training program, or undertaking a recognition of prior learning. Once you know which of these options best apply to you, then you can access further information.
See below for a general outline of the program types available to you. For more detailed information, however, click on the links at the bottom of this page.
The Certificate IV in Children's Services (Outside School Hours Care) is available as a government funded option either under a traineeship or non-traineeship scheme for new workers through the Victorian Training Guarantee.
The Victorian Training Guarantee is making training more accessible to people who do not have post-school qualifications or who want to gain a higher qualification than they already hold.
To be eligible you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia. If you are also under 20 years old you will be eligible. If you are over 20 years of age you will be eligible if you are enrolling into a course that is higher than any qualification you already hold.
This qualification can be delivered as a self funded training program to people not currently working in the industry but interested in pursuing a career in children's services, or to those workers who are not eligible for Victorian Training Guarantee funding but wish to undertake training.
The Certificate IV in Children's Services (Outside School Hours Care) can also be gained through a self funded assessment only process.
